Remember Mr. Potato Head? No? Okay, well then you just ruined my entire setup here by being a sarcastic jerk (as usual), so I’ll just get to the point: Holy Potatoes! A Weapon Shop?! is a quirky new management game on Steam that features potatoes very prominently. Get ready to be a potato, selling weapons to potatoes, who are off on quests to defeat evil potatoes. Hope you can deal.
Holy Potatoes expands on the role of a blacksmith from traditional RPGs—normally assigned to NPCs—and builds a diverse world around it. It features a variety of random events and weather conditions that influence how well the player’s sales do and who appears to buy the player’s products. The traditional heroes of RPGs are the ones who come to you—the player—usually requesting specific items or bidding on your creations.
The player has twenty different areas to explore in order to find hidden materials, relics and enchantments for forging new, or requested, weapons. Blueprints can be purchased which unlock new designs. Your personal workshop is fully customizable and upgradeable. If your business produces quality weapons and armor for heroes, those same heroes will return after slaying a dragon for more items and equipment.
Clearly Daylight Studios chose a simple and cartoon-ish art style to fit their wacky potato world. Although the visual style seems basic, it fits well with the simple goals and lifestyle one would expect from the world of a potato blacksmith. The soundtrack was composed by Kimura Masahiko, the man behind the original score of the Genso Suikoden and Castlevania series.
Daylight Studios brings a game that is novel with its creation of the world of a classic NPC role with its cartoony world of Holy Potatoes. If you loved computer games like Rollercoaster Tycoon where the player has to worry about costs, public approval and expanding the company, this game will feel familiar.
