Upcoming Steam release Feist has been in development since 2008, when Bits & Beasts co-founders Adrian Stutz and Florian Faller created new software to playtest fantastical new gameplay mechanics and techniques. It might have ended there, had positive feedback from fans and peers not prompted the duo to continue developing the project as a video game. Now, after partnering with producer Finji, Bits & Beasts has announced a July 23 release date for their flagship title.
Bits & Beasts cites cult classic films as major influences on the development of the game’s graphics. It’s not difficult to see the similarities between Feist and other fantastical fantasies like The Dark Crystal and Russian animated classic Hedgehog in the Fog. The plots of all three projects center on protagonists who embark on gutsy, Hobbit-like adventures.
Although Hedgehog and Feist both feature spiky heroes who explore shadowy environments, gamers will be much more likely to notice the striking similarity between Bits & Beasts’ upcoming title and Playdead’s 2010 release, Limbo. Like Feist, Limbo drops players in the middle of a quiet forest full of terrors, and challenges them to make it out alive.
Fan support for Feist nearly pales in comparison to its industry record, which is festooned with award nominations and generous praise from all corners. Since 2009, Feist has been a part of nineteen gaming, technology, and design exhibitions on four continents. The game has won seven awards, most recently Best in Play at GDC 2015. Added together, these accolades mean Bits & Beasts can almost certainly expect to turn a profit on their fascinating first release when it drops on July 23.
