You are a Korean student, trying to survive a harrowing week of finals. After another student’s attempted suicide, no one can focus on testing, but it’s the last stretch and class must go on. To make it through your last final, you pull an all-nighter studying. The Coma is a 2D side-scrolling horror game in which you doze off through your final exam. The impact on your GPA is horrifying.
Oh, and you wake up trapped in your school with hordes of grotesque monsters that want to violently kill you. I guess that’s pretty scary too.
Take control of Youngho and navigate him through the hellish halls of school after hours. Obviously, you’ll be armed with only a flashlight. It wouldn’t be a horror game if the power hadn’t been cut and you could see more than a few feet ahead of yourself at a time. Despite poor visibility, you’ll want to stumble in and out of classrooms pretty efficiently. Gathering supplies and evidence is important, but so is keeping all of your organs inside your body. Before you start searching every locker in the hallway, remember that you’re not alone in the school.
At the head of the monster pack is a terrifying creature known simply as “the Killer.” Operating with a sophisticated AI, the Killer is a smart, unpredictable, and ruthless predator. To effectively avoid evisceration, you’ll want to stay alert. When you hear her footsteps, you better find a place to hide and fast. Your odds in a one-on-one fight don’t look so good.
If you do accidentally go toe-to-toe with a ghoul and somehow survive, you can briefly feel like a normal teenager again by recharging with junk food or caffeine. I’m sure we can all relate to Youngho curing himself with a little bit of coffee, a fitting mechanic for the debut title of Devespresso Games.
Look for future updates on the game’s official Facebook page, currently run by Youngho’s in-universe vigilante friend Yeasol. You can also give Devespresso some love by voting for the Coma on Steam Greenlight.
